Pune: The Pune district administration has set strict deadlines to improve road safety and reduce accidents across the district. District Collector Jitendra Dudi has directed authorities to inspect and eliminate all 43 identified black spots by 10th October.

He also directed the concerned agencies to make roads across the district pothole-free by 31st August. Accident-prone junctions must be improved within six months. Encroachments along national and major highways must be removed within 15 days.

Meeting Reviewed Road Safety…
The directions were issued during a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee held at the District Collector’s Office on Friday. Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandeep Gill, Superintending Engineer Bharat Kumar Bawiskar and senior officials from various departments were present.
The meeting reviewed accident-prone locations, road safety measures, traffic regulation, junction improvements, potholes, encroachments and road safety awareness.

The administration discussed measures to be taken at 43 black spots identified after inspections. Collector Dudi said authorities should not rely only on temporary measures at these locations. They must identify the reasons behind accidents and implement permanent solutions.
Officials have been asked to inspect road designs, turns, intersections, lighting systems, directional boards, warning signs and road markings at the identified locations. Necessary civil engineering changes must be made based on these inspections.
Dudi also directed the authorities to ensure that speed breakers are constructed only in accordance with prescribed technical standards. CCTV cameras, speed monitoring systems, and proper lighting should be installed where required.
The administration will also undertake geographic mapping of accident-prone locations. Technology should be used to provide advance warnings to motorists approaching such spots.

The Collector directed agencies to complete improvement works at accident-prone junctions across the district within six months.
He also set August 31 as the deadline for filling potholes on roads across the district. The concerned agencies have been told to complete the work without delay.
Dudi said road safety works must be carried out within the given timelines. Agencies responsible for the roads will be expected to ensure that pending works are completed on time.

The administration has also taken action against encroachments along national highways and other major highways.
Dudi directed people responsible for such encroachments to remove them voluntarily within 15 days. If the encroachments are not removed within the deadline, the concerned highway agencies have been instructed to take action with the help of the police.
The move is aimed at clearing obstructions that can affect traffic movement and increase the risk of accidents.

The Collector also directed agencies to ensure proper safety measures at road construction sites. Construction zones must have clear directional signs, warning boards and other necessary safety arrangements. These measures are meant to alert motorists and prevent accidents near ongoing road works.
Dudi warned that action would be taken against contractors and responsible agencies if prescribed safety standards were not followed at construction sites. Officials were also instructed to coordinate with each other to ensure that people injured in road accidents receive prompt medical treatment.
The administration will also conduct wider road safety awareness campaigns for motorists and citizens. The campaigns will focus on following traffic rules and taking necessary precautions while travelling. Heads of various departments and other concerned officials attended the meeting.
