Does Miami Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra Get Enough Credit?

The Miami Heat are dealing with plenty of observations from people from the outside.
Some are criticizing them after signing former Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo but not being able to acquire players to complement him. They missed out on LeBron James, leaving them with only players like DeMar DeRozan, Klay Thompson and Bradley Beal as the only other options.

It has led to many in the media projecting the Heat as once again Play-In Tournament candidate or a low seed in the Eastern Conference.
What those are forgetting is the Heat possess one of the best coaches in the NBA in Erik Spoelstra. He could serve as a reason why they could win with Antetokounmpo and center Bam Adebayo as the centerpieces.
A few years ago, Spoelstra was named one of the top 15 coaches in NBA history. Sure, he won his two titles with teams filled with LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade but he also made his mark after they left.
The Heat made the Finals in 2020 with Jimmy Butler as the lead before losing to the James-led Los Angeles Lakers in the Orlando "bubble" season. Three years later, they advanced to the Finals as the No. 8 seed before losing to Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets in 2023 in five games.
If anything, Spoelstra could help the Heat make up for the loss of James.
LOW RATING FOR BAM?
The Miami Heat have always had an issue with center Bam Adebayo not receiving enough love for his defensive play.
It once got to a point where coach Erik Spoelstra publicly campaigned for Adebayo to win the Defensive Player of the Year or make first-team All-Defense. While he has six overall All-Defense team awards (once for first-team), the disrespect sometimes still surfaces.
The latest case was the recent release of the ratings for the popular video game NBA2K. Adebayo was not among the top 10 perimeter defensive players on the game.

Adebayo was given a perimeter defensive rating of 88, which is pretty low for a player of his talents. Perhaps this adds another chip on his shoulder entering this season. He should have an even better chance to showcase his defensive talents now that he is playing alongside superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
