The initiative aims to instil habits of plastic waste segregation, recycling, and environmental stewardship among school students across the city.
Key Highlights Of The Initiative
Fostering Early Responsibility
Speaking at the event, Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar emphasised that engaging students in waste segregation at an early age is vital for building a stronger, cleaner city. Students will be encouraged to collect and segregate various types of plastic waste—including PET bottles, food wrappers, plastic bags, shampoo bottles, and toys—for recycling.
Digital Tracking & Passbooks
Every participating school will be issued a specialised passbook to track the volume of plastic collected. A dedicated mobile application will maintain digital logs to ensure accurate monitoring of plastic sent for recycling from each school.
Student Recognition
Periodic evaluations will be conducted to assess student participation, with active contributors receiving awards and recognition for their environmental efforts.
Proactive Waste Reduction
TMC Additional Commissioner Prashant Rode highlighted that managing waste requires going beyond collection and processing. Educating citizens to minimise waste generation at the source is critical to combating long-term land and water pollution caused by non-biodegradable plastics.
Corporate Partnership
Dr Angelo George, CEO of Bisleri International, noted that Bisleri has been actively engaged with communities, schools, and civic bodies since 2019. He expressed confidence that partnering with TMC will further strengthen eco-friendly habits among the youth.
