Purdue athletic director Tommy McClelland had his introductory press conference on Thursday and made a rather fascinating comment about Indiana.

McClelland was discussing championships and said, “If you don’t want to win championships, go to Indiana.”

“Every recruit, every student-athlete will hear this message repeatedly: We are here to win championships. If you don’t want to win championships, go to Indiana,” McClelland said.

It’s a rather odd statement because Indiana just won its first national title in college football last season and is set up to make another run this year. Meanwhile, Purdue’s football program went 2-10 last season and has only won three games in the last two seasons.

To take it a step further, Purdue has only won seven games over the last three seasons. The program is hoping that head coach Barry Odom can turn it around after only winning two games last year. This will be his second season as Purdue’s head coach.

This quote will certainly raise some tempers for Purdue’s showdown against Indiana at the end of the 2026 regular season. Indiana players and coaches might even have a field day with it.

Purdue will play Indiana on Nov. 28. A start time has yet to be announced.
