The preliminary round draw will determine the path to the lucrative group stages. A total of 56 clubs have entered the CAF Confederation Cup, while 61 teams will compete in the CAF Champions League.

South African clubs will be among those waiting to learn their fate ahead of the new continental campaign. The preliminary rounds mark the first step towards the group stage, where Africa’s top clubs battle for continental glory.

South African clubs enjoyed another memorable continental campaign during the 2025/26 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. Mamelodi Sundowns led the way by lifting Africa’s biggest club prize.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS CHAMPIONSHIP
The Brazilians claimed their second Champions League title after defeating AS FAR 2-1 on aggregate in the final. They progressed directly to the group stage before eliminating Stade Malien in the quarter-finals and Espérance de Tunis in the semi-finals. Their triumph also secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
Orlando Pirates, meanwhile, suffered an early exit from the CAF Champions League. The Buccaneers comfortably beat Lioli FC 7-0 on aggregate in the first preliminary round before facing FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo. After losing the first leg 3-0, Pirates produced a stunning comeback by winning the return leg 3-0. However, they were eliminated 5-4 on penalties, ending their continental campaign before the group stage.
South Africa also had two representatives in the Confederation Cup. Stellenbosch FC progressed to the group stage after receiving a bye into the later qualifying rounds and competed in Group C alongside CR Belouizdad, AS Otoho and Singida Black Stars.
Kaizer Chiefs marked their return to continental football by reaching the group stage, where they faced Zamalek, Al Masry and ZESCO United in Group D. The Amakhosi finished third in the group and narrowly missed out on a place in the quarter-finals.
South African clubs will once again be well represented in the 2026/27 continental competitions. Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates will compete in the CAF Champions League, while Kaizer Chiefs return to the CAF Confederation Cup alongside Durban City, who will make their historic debut in African club football after qualifying for the competition.
