Assam: 95 dead in flood-related incidents

The toll in flood-related incidents in Assam has risen to 95 since the third week of July, with five more fatalities being recorded on Wednesday.

River embankments were breached at five places in Biswanath district and two places in Darrang district on Wednesday following heavy rainfall, the state disaster management authority said.
Water was overflowing at several places along the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river, especially in the foothills of Bhutan, it said. As a result, large swathes of land in Udalguri, Darrang and other districts in the region had been submerged.
The Dhansiri river was flowing above the danger level as of Wednesday, the disaster management authority said.
More than 560 villages in 14 districts were affected by flooding. The districts were Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Kamrup Metropolitan, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Nagaon, Darrang, Karbi Anglong and Udalguri.
The flooding has affected 1.6 lakh persons, with more than 12,300 having been taken to relief camps. An additional 32,000 persons were relying on assistance from relief distribution centres.
Several houses were damaged and more than 8,500 animals had been washed away, the disaster management authority said.
