Mets calling up 6 players to fill out roster after deadline selling spree

If this season went according to plan for the Mets, Tuesday would be the first opportunity for New York to show off all its new toys.
That’s what the day after the deadline represents for so many contenders around the league.

The Mets were built to be one of those contenders in 2026. That meant Monday’s deadline was profiled as a final opportunity to acquire big-league talent for a last push for a deep postseason run.

There will be new faces in the Mets’ clubhouse on Tuesday in Cleveland, but these players are not high-profile acquisitions from other clubs. These are the replacements for all the valuable pieces New York traded away in their pre-deadline yard sale.
Considering that the Mets had traded away seven players from their active roster in the days leading up to the deadline — including four deals featuring five players on Monday — there were quite a few spots to fill.
Here’s the group that the Mets are adding to their active roster on Tuesday, per Will Sammon of The Athletic: RHP Dedniel Núñez, LHP Jefry Yan, LHP Nate Lavender, RHP Chayce McDermott, RHP Xzavion Curry and OF Cristian Pache.
Technically, one of those players is a trade deadline acquisition. McDermott was acquired from the Dodgers on Monday in exchange for Triple-A catcher Ben Rortvedt. The right-hander was recently designated for assignment by Los Angeles and joins the Mets, having pitched in 2 1/3 big-league innings with the Dodgers this summer. Over 32 games in Triple-A this year, McDermott has a 4.55 ERA.
Everybody else is a promotion from Triple-A Syracuse.
It’s a well-deserved call-up for Lavender and Yan, who both had attractive strikeout rates in the minors. Yan’s strikeout rate (43.5%) is the second-best mark among pitchers who have thrown more than 40 innings in all of minor league baseball this season. Lavender is eighth on that same leaderboard with a 40.2% strikeout rate.
Yan has a 3.24 ERA this year in 41 2/3 innings across Double-A and Triple-A. In 33 innings at Triple-A this season, Lavender has a 3.27 ERA.
Núñez, who is making his return to the Mets after a long road back from Tommy John surgery, gave up three earned runs over nine innings with Syracuse. That was considered the end of his rehab assignment. In 2024, Núñez posted a 2.31 ERA over 35 innings with the Mets in his first taste of big-league action.
That’s a step down in the bullpen from the likes of Luke Weaver, Huascar Brazobán, Brooks Raley and A.J. Minter, the four relievers who were traded by the Mets in recent days.
Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns recognized that New York will need to import relievers this offseason to rebuild the bullpen. In the meantime, it’s up to these arms to bridge the gap between the Mets’ rotation and closer Devin Williams.
“We’re also excited for some of the members of our pen going forward who are going to have a chance to contribute at the major league level who we think will do a very good job,” Stearns said in his post-deadline presser on Monday.
Curry returns to the active roster after throwing five innings in relief of Kodai Senga against the Marlins at Citi Field on Friday.
Pache was a non-roster invitee with the Mets in spring training. He now has an opportunity to play in a big-league game for the first time since Sept. 22, 2024. In Triple-A this season, Pache is hitting .232 with a .645 OPS in 93 games.
