Colts' coach shares early impression of Day 3 draft pick in training camp

Four training camp practices in, Indianapolis Colts' rookie linebacker Bryce Boettcher appears to very much be in the mix for starting snaps this season.

During offseason programs, as the Colts rotated heavily at the linebacker position, Boettcher saw opportunities then with the ones. Those have continued to come his way early in training camp, particularly with CJ Allen and Akeem Davis-Gaither each missing time.
"Another young guy who is learning," said defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, "but I think he is very intentional about what he does. You hear about boxers where they're heavy-handed. He's a heavy-handed guy. When he hits you, you can feel it. I think he'll continue to shine when the pads come up."
Boettcher played over 1,200 snaps the last two seasons at Oregon, including nearly 800 in 2025. He's been a reliable tackler during the span, allowing him to grade out well by PFF's metrics.
That ability also helped him limit plays in the passing game, surrendering just 6.0 yards per catch last season, along with forcing an interception and three pass breakups.
Earlier this offseason, Colts' linebackers coach James Bettcher described Boettcher's game as someone who plays with his hair on fire and is "fast, violent, (and) physical."
Allen is expected to start at the MIKE linebacker position, while Boettcher and Davis-Gaither compete for the WILL linebacker role next to him.
