Detroit Tigers Trade Ace Tarik Skubal to Dodgers in Franchise-Defining Deal

After weeks of speculation and endless "will they or won't they" discussions, the Detroit Tigers have officially traded ace Tarik Skubal.

To no one's surprise, it is the Los Angeles Dodgers who landed the two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner.
According to Jeff Passan, the trade sends Skubal to Los Angeles in exchange for outfielder Zyhir Hope, right-handed pitcher River Ryan, and right-handed pitcher Brady Smith.
As difficult as it is for Tigers fans to see Skubal go, the move always felt inevitable. With just one year remaining before he reached free agency, Skubal was set to command a contract well beyond what Detroit was realistically expected to pay.
Holding onto him while sitting six games under .500 simply didn't make much sense. Scott Harris ultimately made the decision he felt gave the organization the best chance to build for the future by moving the best pitcher in baseball.
If there's one silver lining for Tigers fans, it's that if Detroit somehow sneaks into the postseason this year, they wouldn't have to face Skubal unless both teams reached the World Series.
Before diving into the return package, I want to take a moment to talk about what trades and moves like this mean for Major League Baseball.
If you're a baseball fan, you probably already know what's wrong with the sport. Teams backed by ownership groups worth billions continue to separate themselves from the rest of the league financially. Between massive payrolls and creative contract structures that push hundreds of millions of dollars into the future, the financial gap continues to grow.
The Dodgers aren't breaking any rules. If the system allows it, why wouldn't they take advantage? But that's exactly the problem. When one organization can continue stacking stars while smaller-market teams are forced to trade away homegrown superstars before free agency, it creates an uneven playing field.
Whether you agree or disagree, it's one of the biggest reasons many believe baseball is headed toward another labor dispute after next season. While this trade alone isn't the reason, it certainly adds fuel to the conversation, especially if the Dodgers hand Skubal another massive contract this offseason.
Still, baseball moves on, and so do the Detroit Tigers.
So what exactly did Detroit get in return?
Zyhir Hope | OF
Hope is MLB's No. 25 overall prospect and immediately becomes one of the premier young talents in Detroit's farm system.
Across four minor league seasons, Hope owns a .281 batting average with 48 home runs, 62 doubles, and an impressive .384 on-base percentage.
He entered the season as the Dodgers' fifth-ranked prospect and will now carry high expectations as one of the centerpieces of Detroit's future.
River Ryan | RHP
Ryan made his Major League debut in 2024 before missing all of 2025 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
He was ranked as the Dodgers' seventh-best prospect and showed plenty of promise during his brief time in the majors. Over four starts in 2024, Ryan threw 20.1 innings while allowing just three earned runs.
If he returns healthy, Ryan has the potential to become an immediate contributor in Detroit's starting rotation.
Brady Smith | RHP
Smith, the Dodgers' No. 17-ranked prospect, rounds out the trade package.
Over two seasons in the Dodgers organization, Smith has started 31 games, posting an 0-10 record with a 4.72 ERA. He has allowed 50 earned runs across 95.1 innings pitched.
While the win-loss record certainly isn't eye-popping, pitching prospect development is rarely linear, and Detroit's player development staff will hope they can help unlock another level of his game.
There's no denying this is a nerve-wracking trade.
The Tigers are giving up the best pitcher in the world and a two-time reigning Cy Young Award winner in exchange for three prospects—one coming off Tommy John surgery, one still searching for his first professional win, and one outfielder with tremendous upside but plenty left to prove.
Will this trade work?
Nobody knows.
Only time will tell if Scott Harris made the right decision.
For now, though, Tigers fans should simply appreciate everything Tarik Skubal gave this organization. From a seventh-round draft pick to the best pitcher in baseball, he developed into one of the greatest success stories the franchise has seen in years.
