After news broke on July 24 that the former Los Angeles Lakers star would be coming to Philly, the team made the signing official through a news release on July 27.

The signing of James caps a remarkable offseason for Philadelphia following a second-round playoff loss to the eventual-NBA champion New York Knick.

Here's the latest on James joining the Sixers.

Sixers make LeBron James signing official

In a news release, the 76ers President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey announced that the team signed the four-time NBA champion and four-time NBA MVP award-winner.

"I am thrilled to welcome LeBron James to the Philadelphia 76ers. One of the greatest players in NBA history and one of the best athletes ever, his accomplishments are iconic: four-time NBA Champion, four-time NBA MVP, four-time Finals MVP, three-time Olympic Gold medalist, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, a record 22 All-Star selections, and 21 All-NBA selections,” Sixers managing partner Josh Harris said in the news release. “I cannot wait to see LeBron alongside Jaylen Brown, VJ Edgecombe, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and our talented roster as we work to deliver a championship for Philly. To LeBron and his family: we are grateful you chose the 76ers, and look forward to this next chapter of your legendary career. Welcome to the 76ers!"

In the release, Gansey highlighted James' NBA accolades including being the league's all-time leading scorer.

James has also compiled at least 10,000 points, rebounds and assists while holding career averages of 26.8 points on 50.7-percent shooting, 7.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 37.6 minutes in 1,622 games across a record-breaking 23 NBA seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers.

“There is no doubt LeBron is one of the greatest players to ever play the game of basketball and there are no words to measure the impact he’ll have on this organization,” Gansey said in the release. “I have had the pleasure of knowing LeBron since high school and have seen the high-level impact he’s produced at every stop of his basketball journey.

"He is a consummate professional, the ultimate competitor, and a tireless worker. But he is also an incredible person with natural leadership traits, a family man, and someone who possesses unwavering commitment to community and those around him. We couldn’t be happier that he is officially here and are excited to welcome him, Savannah, and the James family into our 76ers family.”

LeBron James press conference?

After most major acquisitions, teams make players available to announce the signing or trade and to speak with the media. However, this is LeBron James, so this is no normal circumstance.

James did not have an introductory press conference with the Lakers when he joined the team in 2018. He did not speak to the media in Los Angeles until media day.

The four-time MVP has not participated in an introductory press conference since deciding to join Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade as a member of the Miami Heat in 2010.

“There’s not going to be an introductory press conference,” said ESPN’s Brian Windhorst during the July 23 episode of “First Take.” “You don’t have to get it ready. After ‘not 5, not 6, not 7’ LeBron is done with introductory press conferences. … If he does one, it’ll be on his platforms and not an open thing that you’re gonna have.”

What jersey number will LeBron James wear with the Sixers?

The Sixers made it official on July 27 that James will wear No. 23.

Sixers season tickets

If you're looking for season tickets, you can still get them via the Sixers' website nba.com/sixers/tickets. But those are likely going quickly.

If you're looking for single-game tickets, you'll have to go through Ticketmaster.com, and you'll have to wait until mid-August. That's when the NBA schedule is expected to be released.

For now, the Sixers have announced two preseason games, including a home preseason game against the Celtics on Oct. 16. For that game, tickets on StubHub begin at $318 for upper-level seats. That's as of 3:20 p.m. on July 24. They increase dramatically from there.

Sixers KCP signing?

After signing James, the Sixers likely are on tap to bring in some more reinforcements.

Former LeBron running mate Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies on July 26 and is reportedly expected to sign with Philly.

The three-and-D guard previously played with James on the Lakers when the team won the NBA championship in 2020. He also was part of the Denver Nuggets' title run in 2023.

To make room for KCP, the Sixers will likely trade or waive second-year forward Johni Broome. If waived, the Sixers would have to stretch Broome's contract across multiple seasons for salary cap purposes.

Philly could also waive forward Jabari Walker since his salary isn't guaranteed.
