And for fans of the game of basketball, it would've been fascinating to watch the King team up with Steph Curry and Draymond Green in the twilights of all of their careers.
In the end, though, the Warriors didn't get James.
On Friday, he chose the Philadelphia 76ers over the Warriors, Heat, Cavaliers and Timberwolves.
And while the reasons across the board were different, it was pretty clear in the end why he didn't want the Warriors.

Why didn't LeBron James sign with the Warriors?
The reality is that it wasn't clear the Warriors are actually good enough.
LeBron wants to still compete for a championship. In the Western Conference in particular, is Golden State in that mix?
This is what The Athletic wrote in its all-encompassing report on James' free agency:
"The problem for the Warriors, especially with Jimmy Butler still rehabbing an ACL injury, is that they just couldn’t sell a realistic path back toward championship contention. In the end, as much as the idea of playing with Curry may have been appealing, the lack of realistic contention likely hurt the Warriors more than anything else."

So in the end, instead of the Bay Area, James heads to the City of Brotherly Love.
The Warriors could still have a fun season ahead, but it will be lacking royalty.
