UNIQA ÖFB Cup goals galore in Oberwart
Amid a festive atmosphere, our Red Bulls were celebrating after the final whistle as a resounding 7-1 win against Austrian Regional League East side SV Oberwart saw us advance to the second round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup in our first competitive match of the new season. Two early goals, and a Damir Redzic brace, put our lads on the path to victory in a one-sided affair. The draw for our next cup opponents, who will face us on the first weekend of September, will take place on Wednesday evening.
Match summary
This should apply not only to today's clash, but our entire cup season. When our name is there – in this case, on the dressing room door in Oberwart – we're still in it! Even though the Burgenland team had the first chance, with new first-choice goalkeeper Christian Zawieschitzky saving a long-range shot, the first celebrations came our way.

Edmund Baidoo received a through ball from Diabate, rounded the goalkeeper, and slotted the ball into the empty net (8').
Then Yorbe Vertessen finished from a similar position, this time being set up perfectly by captain Nikolas Veratschnig (11').
As the first half wound on, Danny Röhl's boys managed their energy somewhat more carefully. We made it 3-0 thanks to a powerful penalty kick from Diakite (33'), after Trimmel had pushed Veratschnig in the penalty area. However, Oberwart then managed to pull one back: following a switch of play, Hutter made it 3-1 (35') – in the final moment of note of the first half at the Informstadion.
This brief resurgence from Oberwart proved to be merely a side note, as our team stepped up the pace considerably after the break. Following aggressive pressing by Baidoo and Diakite, early substitute Damir Redzic happily slotted home to make it 4-1 (54').
Then Nikolas Veratschnig added another with a header, having no other option but to expertly place Sota Kitano's pinpoint cross into the far corner of the net (76').
The final stages of the match began, but our lads weren't finished scoring. Kitano also got on the scoresheet, curling the ball into the right corner to complete the rout (80').
The last word belonged to Redzic, even though our team was down to ten men after using all their substitutions due to a Baidoo injury. The Hungarian followed up an unstoppable solo run with a well-placed shot (88'), helping our team through to the second round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup in the competitive debut of coach Danny Röhl and captain Nikolas Veratschnig.
The draw will take place next Wednesday during the ORF 1 broadcast of SK Rapid's Europa League match. Our next opponent will be determined at approximately 22:40 CEST.
The competitive season opener in the cup was a success, and the first challenges in the ADMIRAL Bundesliga are just around the corner. Our lads want to get off to a great start in the league campaign too against TSV Hartberg next Saturday at 19:30 – and with you as our twelfth man behind us! All in all, it was a very good start, nothing more and nothing less. It was the expected must win, and we didn't let ourselves down at all in the cup. We were there from the first minute, although we had a bit of a lull in the first half. As a coach, you're never happy with conceding a goal. It was important that we continued to play the second half with the same seriousness and intensity. That's how we scored four more goals. We need to approach the next few games with exactly this passion and attitude. The opponents will be stronger now. Next week is our first league game, and we have to perform just as well as we did today.
Danny Röhl
I don't think you could ask for a better start at your new club. I wear the captain's armband with immense pride and honour, and I will try to represent the team well in public. I'm also incredibly proud of the team. It's not just down to me that we've had a good start, but to every single player. I believe that's why we put in such a good performance today – because we simply played well as a team.
