Former Avalanche defensemand and 2022 Stanley Cup champion Jack Johnson has dipped his toes into the coaching ranks.

Ohio State University’s women’s hockey team announced on Thursday that Johnson is joining their powerhouse program as an associate coach. Johnson, who went to Michigan and is a proud Wolverines alumnus, resigned from his post as a Vancouver Canucks scout to accept this new role.
Johnson, 39, last played in the NHL in 2024-25, suiting up in 41 games in his second stint with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Before that, he played most of the previous three seasons with the Avalanche, with a stint in Chicago mixed in.
The native of Indianapolis, Indiana, also had stints with the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Los Angeles Kings after getting drafted No. 3 overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2005.
The 2010 Olympian signed a PTO with the Avs in 2021 and earned a roster spot out of training camp. He ended up scoring the season’s opening goal in October and was a staple of the blueline through the final two and a half rounds of the playoffs. Johnson attempted one more NHL run last fall on a training camp tryout with Minnesota but chose to work as a scout for the Canucks after getting cut before the end of preseason.
