Jose Ramirez Makes Immediate Impact in Return, Despite Guardians' Loss

Jose Ramirez spent just over five weeks on the injured list with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand.

Instead of the 33-year-old going out on a rehab assignment at the Minor League level to get his timing back, the Cleveland Guardiansactivated Ramirez directly off the IL on Wednesday, and he was right back to hitting at the top of their order.

Despite not facing big-league pitching in over a month, Ramirez looked like his usual self against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday evening. 

In Ramirez’s first plate appearance since June 13, he worked a five-pitch at-bat against Twins starter Bailey Ober, which ended in a line drive single to right field.

Ramirez's didn’t stop there, though. 

He didn’t waste any time reminding everyone what makes him such a dangerous player on the base paths. Chase DeLauter was the hitter immediately following Ramirez, and he ended up flying out to left field, but Ramirez aggressively tagged up and safely advanced the bases. 

Then, a few pitches later, Brayan Rocchio perfectly placed a ball into right field, allowing Ramirez to score from second base. 

"Just fun to have hime back. First inning shows you what we missed," said manager Stephen Vogt after the game.

"Not a shock to see him come right out of the gate and get things going. It's a testament to his hard work."

Ramirez tacked on another hit and an RBI on a weakly hit dribbler to third in the bottom of the second inning. He ended up going 2-for-5 at the plate during his first night back.

Ramirez also fielded a handful of ground balls at the hot corner, just to prove his hand is well enough to handle defense, too.

Perhaps the most important outcome of the game was that Ramirez said he felt good and healthy on th field, and "very happy to be back."

“It's hard to explain, but it's real: That sensation of not being able to be in lineup is something you can feel, and I was really looking forward to being back after a month," said Ramirez through interpreter Auggie Rivero after the game. 

All things considered, this was a successful first game back for Ramirez 

Vogt said ahead of Wednesday’s game that there would be some limitations with Ramirez as he gets reacclimated. But based on how J-Ram looked, he’s piking up right where he left sinve ther injury.
