Grand Forks Spitfires' Mattison Kwarta wins Home Run Challenge at All-Star Game

Jul. 12—MADISON, Wis. — Grand Forks Spitfires standout Mattison Kwarta won the Home Run Challenge at the Northwoods League All-Star Game on Saturday night.

In all, five Grand Forks players participated in the All-Star event, a first for Northwoods League softball.

Kwarta, a San Diego State freshman from Red Bluff, Calif., leads the Spitfires in batting average (.493) and home runs (13). Kwarta's .493 average is just behind the No. 1 spot in the Northwoods League at .494. Similarly, Kwarta's 13 homers are one behind a pair of hitters with 14 on the Northwoods' leaderboard.

Kwarta primarily pitched in her freshman season at San Diego State, appearing in 28 games as the team's primary left-handed option. She finished the year with seven at-bats.

Grand Forks was part of the West team, which lost 11-10 to the East in eight innings.

Grand Forks' Alex Graham, of Weatherford College, went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game. Fellow Spitfire, Taylor Larson, went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Larson is a third baseman from York University (Neb.).

The East won in walk-off fashion in a game that featured 25 combined hits.

Danielle Lucey, of the University of Wisconsin, delivered the game-winning RBI and was 3-for-4 at the plate. Mickayla Tosch, of Wichita State, went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Hilary Blomberg, also of Wisconsin, drove in three runs and was 2-for-3.

Ryan Maddox, of the University of Washington, pitched five innings with two strikeouts while allowing three runs on three hits and seven walks.

The Spitfires are 13-12 this summer and sit in third place in the Northwoods League standings.

Grand Forks hosts the La Crosse Steam at 7:05 p.m. Monday at Albrecht Field.
