England held off Norway 2-1 in extra time in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. But after the match, England manager Thomas Tuchel was very critical of the team’s performance in a heated postgame interview with ITV Sport reporter Gabriel Clarke.

To begin the interview, Clarke mentioned how Tuchel has “talked about the team suffering before.”

“I didn’t talk about suffering. No. I never talked about suffering,” Tuchel said.

Tuchel proceeded to criticize the team’s performance in the victory.

“We made life very, very difficult for ourselves today,” Tuchel explained. “The result is fantastic. We’re in the last four. It’s amazing. But I’m not happy with the performance.”

“In what sense?” Clarke asked.

“In every sense,” Tuchel said. “It was, again, the commitment is there, but we made life very, very difficult for us in the way we played, how we played. It was sloppy. A lot of technical mistakes. Not fast enough. Not repetitive enough. We were lucky today.”

Clarke asked if it was a “mentality” thing, and that suggestion really irritated Tuchel.

“No. Mentality? This is pure mentality!” Tuchel said, while making facial expressions and hand gestures in frustration at the question. “How can you ask about mentality now? This pure mentality! It’s not about mentality!… There’s no mentality problem! This is pure mentality! This is pure mentality! You can bottle it up and sell it!… It’s the quality of our games! That’s it. It has nothing to do with mentality.”

“Overall, we got lucky today,” Tuchel added.

Tuchel did speak well about the performance of England star midfielder Jude Bellingham.

“Enough said. He does it every single match,” Tuchel said about Bellingham. “World class.”

But Bellingham didn’t seem to appreciate Clarke’s criticism of the team when he was told the comments in multiple media sessions.

“[Tuchel] said he was disappointed with the performance,” a reporter told Bellingham. “There could have been more, in many different ways.”

“Yeah, well, whatever,” Bellingham responded. “Whatever… It’s difficult out there. It’s difficult. It’s a tough shift. All the players are put in a very tough shift. So, my thoughts and appreciation goes to the players who’s out there, who put in a great shift for that game.”

[Tuchel] has just been quite critical of the team after the game,” a reporter informed Bellingham in the postgame press conference. “Does that show the standards that he expects, the standards you guys expect of each other, and maybe that there’s more to come from the team?”

“Maybe. Or maybe he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those kind of conditions against Erling Haaland, [Martin Ødegaard], [Antonio Nusa], [Alexander Sørloth],” Bellingham explained. “That’s not an easy team to play against. So, you know, I think we’ve tried to create a positive environment, and we should continue that going into the final four. I can’t speak highly enough for the lads. You’re not going to win every game popping the ball and making a thousand passes. Sometimes, you have to win dirty, and we’ve done that again tonight.”

Bellingham scored both goals in the England victory and has six goals in the 2026 World Cup.

England will face Argentina.
