Scottie Scheffler’s performance at the Scottish Open was jarring.

The world number one missed his first cut since August 2022, shooting a two-over par 72 on Friday to fall two shots below the cut line. Scheffler has always struggled at this event, but this was a new low in what has been a disappointing year for his lofty standards.

Scheffler held the longest active made cut streak on the PGA Tour prior to this week, making the weekend in 78 straight events. It was some way shy of Tiger Woods’ record of 142, but it’s still a mightily impressive achievement. He ranks fifth all-time in the all-time ranking of consecutive made cuts.

The new holder of the active record has some way to go to catch Scheffler’s tally.

Matt Fitzpatrick has the longest streak of PGA Tour made cuts

Unbelievably, it’s Matt Fitzpatrick who now holds the record for the most consecutive made cuts on the PGA Tour, with 28. Until this season, the Englishman hasn’t been performing well, but he’s been consistent enough week to week to maintain this record.

Fitzpatrick’s last missed cut was at the 2025 Zurich Classic alongside his brother, Alex. This year, the Fitzpatricks made up for their missed cut with a victory that secured Alex’s PGA Tour card.

Sheffield’s golf star has an argument for being the best player in 2026 so far. He’s won three times on the PGA Tour, rising to number four in the Official World Golf Rankings, and he looks likely to add another win to his season tally at this week’s Scottish Open.

A 65 on Friday brought him to just one shot behind the leading group, which includes world number two Rory McIlroy. He’s playing perhaps the best golf of his life and is consistently delivering from week to week.

Fitzpatrick has a real chance to win the week before The Open Championship, setting him up perfectly to contend for his second major at Royal Birkdale.

Xander Schauffele broke impressive made cut streak this year

Fitzpatrick inherited this record not only because Scheffler missed the cut. Earlier in the year, Xander Schauffele also lost his impressive record.

By missing the cut at Torrey Pines at the Farmers Insurance Open, Schauffele lost his streak of 72 made cuts on the PGA Tour. His last made cut before that event was the 2022 Masters.

At the time, Schauffele’s streak was the fifth best in the sport’s history, but Scheffler overtook him before losing his own streak in Scotland.

And when it rains, it pours, as the American missed the cut at the Scottish Open alongside Scheffler to make for a disappointing week of Open Championship preparation.
