It was almost an all-collegiate golfer quarterfinal until Cameron Crawford came from behind to defeat BYU golfer Angus Klintworth on the 19th hole of their match. Crawford played college golf 16 years ago for Dixie State College and is the “old man” of the bunch at age 38.
Leading the way Thursday was defending champion and Arizona State golfer Bowen Mauss, who swept past Brock Sivulich 6 and 5 in the morning round before defeating Aidan Thain 3 and 2 in the afternoon.
He’ll face Layton’s David Liechty, who is transferring from Utah Tech to BYU for the coming season.
Liechty burst onto the local scene three years ago when he made it to the State Am finals. He showed his match play skills again last year when he made it to the semifinals and also qualified for match play at the U.S. Amateur.
Liechty defeated 39-year-old Steele DeWald 2 and 1 after eliminating Joseph Jack 4 and 2 in the morning. DeWald was 1 up through 12 holes before Liechty won holes 13, 15 and 17, the latter with a birdie, to close the match.
Two friends from Lehi square off in another quarterfinal as Carter Frisby takes on KJ Ofahengaue. Frisby, who will be a senior at the University of Idaho, edged Ty Brady on the final hole Thursday afternoon, while Ofahengaue, a junior at Utah Valley, beat Andrew Cottle 2 and 1.
In a mild upset between two 18-year-olds, Kanyon DeRyke defeated Austin Shelley 2 and 1. DeRyke is from Brigham City and is heading to Providence College in Montana, while Shelley, a former Skyline High golfer, will be a freshman at BYU. DeRyke takes on Utah State golfer Noah Moody, who edged Ammon Allred 1 up in the afternoon round.
Another BYU golfer, Jackson Mauss, advanced to the quarters with wins over former champion Cole Ogden and University of Utah golfer Brandon Robison. He’ll face Crawford, who won the Art City Amateur two weeks ago, in the 8:30 a.m. quarterfinal.
After Friday’s quarterfinals, the four winners will play semifinal matches in the afternoon. Whoever emerges from those two matches will come back Saturday for a 36-hole final at 8 a.m.
