The World Cup knockout stage is a double-edged sword: each game could either be Lionel Messi's final World Cup appearance or a simple step on a journey to back-to-back titles.

Messi experienced every emotion against upset-minded Cape Verde in the Round of 32, nearly seeing Argentina's run come to a crashing halt before escaping with a win in extra time. Cape Verde nearly made history, but Egypt is hoping to finish the job against a team that might be showing some cracks in the foundation.

For Messi, Tuesday is also an opportunity to continue making history. Messi became the first player to reach 20 career World Cup goals on Friday, though he still only leads France's Kylian Mbappe on the all-time leaderboard by a single goal. 

The win is more important to Messi than anything else, but another goal would pad his all-time lead and put him in an even better position to win the Golden Boot.
