Grand Canyon transfer LHP Chase Frey commits to Oregon baseball

The Oregon Ducks are working hard to make savvy additions through the transfer portal this summer. Mark Wasikowski has an eye for under-the-radar talent, and the staff has been able to turn those players into stars quickly in Eugene.

Wasikowski may have found another gem. Left-handed pitcher Chase Frey announced his commitment to the Ducks on Instagram, and he could develop into a critical arm for the program next season. After a standout junior season at Grand Canyon University, Frey could spend his final collegiate season in Eugene.

However, it's still not a sure thing that Frey will take the field with the Ducks. Although he has committed, Frey is eligible to be selected in the 2026 MLB Draft, which will begin on July 11. If Frey decides to return to school, Oregon will be getting a very valuable arm.

Frey has bounced around throughout his college career, with Oregon marking his fourth stop in as many years. The Las Vegas native began his career at Shoreline Community College in Washington before transferring to College of Southern Nevada as a sophomore. He transferred once more for his junior season, winding up with the Lopes in the desert.

In his lone season at Grand Canyon, Frey pitched to a 4.79 ERA over 13 appearances (12 starts) while leading the pitching staff in innings pitched (67 ⅔ innings), strikeouts (69) and WHIP (1.14). He earned an All-Mountain West Second Team selection as well.

Frey got stronger and went deeper into games as the season went along. He tossed a complete-game shutout on the road at Fresno State in April, allowing just two hits and striking out eight. In his next start against UNLV, Frey went 8 ⅔ innings, allowing only one run. He also picked up a career-high 14 strikeouts.

Oregon has been active in the transfer portal, adding under-the-radar pieces that could make an impact next season. Frey is only the second pitcher to commit to the Ducks this offseason, joining USC transfer Michael Ebner.

The Ducks will have to wait until after the MLB draft to see how their rotation for next season might shake out. Cal Scolari and Miles Gosztola, both of whom were in the rotation at the end of the season, could be selected and leave the program, leaving a pair of vacant spots in the rotation next to Will Sanford. Frey would be a likely candidate to fill one of those spots.

Oregon pitching coach Matt Florer developed Scolari and Gosztola into premier starters by the end of the season. If he can work the same magic with Frey during the fall, the Ducks could continue to stack the rotation with talented arms.
