The United States has taken away Canadian gamer boy Devin Wolfgang Vanderhoef’s gadgets for good.

The 26-year-old was convicted by a California jury on two counts of attempted murder and was hammered with two consecutive life sentences.

Vanderhoef, of North Vancouver, travelled from British Columbia to Monterey County as part of a sinister plan to murder a woman he met through online gaming. The victim reportedly spurned the lovesick cyberathlete.

Plotted with fellow gamer

“We hope this case serves as a powerful reminder that online interactions can carry real world consequences, and we encourage parents and community members to remain engaged, informed, and proactive in protecting themselves and their children,” Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto said in a statement.

She added: “When using social media, messaging platforms, or online gaming, you cannot assume the person on the other end is who they claim to be or that they are your friend.”

Vanderhoef allegedly plotted with another gamer to pose as an Amazon delivery driver. The keyboard Casanova then forced his way into the woman’s Salinas home and stabbed her and her boyfriend. He then attempted to choke the gamer girl.

He had reportedly met the California woman online and she became the object of his obsession.

In November 2024, Vanderhoef arrived in Salinas and purchased knives, handcuffs and duct tape and surveilled the home and workplace of the victim.

Couple survived bloody attack

Both victims were able to flee as Vanderhoef’s savage attack continued. The boyfriend eventually disarmed Vanderhoef and stabbed him, but Vanderhoef then tackled the terrified woman and choked her until she could not breathe.

The couple miraculously survived the attack.

Prosecutors said the kooky Canadian had been obsessed with the woman for more than a year. When she blew off his romantic overtures, he became enraged and began planning her death, telling shocked detectives that his plan was to “actually kill someone.”

‘I mean, it’s extraordinary’

Vanderhoef’s sidekick was fellow Canadian Darius Avery White, who was arrested on a flight returning to Canada. He testified against Vanderhoef and pleaded guilty to assault charges.

Vanderhoef was additionally sentenced to five years for inflicting bodily injury and using a weapon during the commission of a crime. He was convicted after a jury trial in February.

“Guys coming from Vancouver to Salinas to pose as an Amazon delivery person and stab somebody. I mean, it’s extraordinary,” one Monterey County District Attorney’s Office prosecutor said.
