He scored the 55th hat trick in World Cup history with his three goals against Algeria and tied Miroslav Klose of Germany for the men's scoring record.

Heading into the final Group J match against Jordan on Saturday, June 27, Argentina had already punched its ticket to the round of 32 and won the group. Manager Lionel Scaloni rested Messi so he could be ready for their first knockout match against tournament sweetheart Cape Verde.

What happens if Argentina loses to Jordan in World Cup?

Essentially nothing happens if Argentina loses its Group J finale in the World Cup to Jordan. The South American side already won the group with six points and a goal differential of +5.

Jordan has already been eliminated from the tournament after losing both their matches, 3-1 to Austria and 2-1 to Algeria.

Austria and Algeria are battling for second place in the table in the other Group J match on Saturday night.

The United States is another team that had already won its group and secured a spot in the round of 32 heading into its final match. The Americans lost to Turkey, 3-2.
