The Bucs’ starting QB spoke from the heart about his feelings on Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking to bounce back in a big way in 2026 after missing out on the playoffs for the first time since the 2019 season last year.

The hope is that QB Baker Mayfield rebounds from a pedestrian season that saw him gut through injuries while trying to elevate a sputtering offense that never got back on track after the bye week. The early returns during offseason work have been encouraging, but how the offense will look in rhythm and under the lights remains to be seen.

Of course, what is the future going to be like for Mayfield in Tampa beyond 2026? That’s been one of the burning questions that has remained unanswered this offseason. Mayfield and the Bucs organization have yet to come to an agreement on contract extension beyond 2026, when he’s a free agent. With training camp just a month away, the clock is starting to tick a little bit louder.

That said, Mayfield was asked about his contract negotiations while at his football camp in Norman, Oklahoma on Saturday. The Bucs’ starting QB made his feelings about the organization and the city of Tampa very clear.

Baker Mayfield looking for ‘middle ground’, says he and his family plan to make Tampa their offseason home regardless

“I would love to be there,” Mayfield said. “I think both sides want to get it done, and it’s a matter of finding that middle ground and what makes both sides happy. Like I fell in love with Norman, our family, we fell in love with Tampa. It’s a great place to raise kids and be around, so regardless of what happens, I think we’ll spend our offseasons there. Obviously, it’s a little brutally hot, but it’s good for training.

“But I want to be there long term. They’ve treated me right, and it’s the first place I’ve gotten to that feels like Oklahoma when it comes down to football is football, how can they put you in the best position to have success on the field and how can they give you the resources to help you out. So, it’s a great place.”

There have certainly been great memories for Mayfield in Tampa beyond the favorable weather (well, perhaps except for the summer heat). He led his team to back-to-back division titles in 2023-24, which included a playoff win over Philadelphia. He made back-to-back Pro Bowls over that span, throwing for 41 touchdowns in 2024. Without question, we’ve seen his best football in Tampa Bay.

Will we continue to see it beyond 2026? We’ll have to wait and see.
