Group E’s final matchday saw Germany fall 2-1 to Ecuador. This records the first defeat to a South American side in the group stage for Germany. An iconic nation at the FIFA World Cup, Germany has only been beaten 9 times in group stage matches. So, this defeat is not going to go down well among the faithful.

Deserved result

Managing the Ecuadorian side, Sebastián Beccacece fielded a highly motivated team who went all out for full 90 minutes. They showed greater agility and moved much faster once they acquired possession. On the other hand, Germany were barely able to function as Ecuador constantly cut off the main attacking pillars. The challenges were vigorous and Die Mannschaft struggled with the physicality of Ecuador’s game.

Joshua Kimmich’s men managed to create some decent chances for themselves but fluffed the lines when the moments arrived. Leroy Sané, Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz all had chances to score a second goal but failed to convert. In the end, the South Americans’ constant heckling allowed very little time for decision making and the German attackers fell short. Even Deniz Undav’s substitution could not answer Naglesmann’s problems in midfield and the wings.
