How Marshawn Lynch represented Seahawks at Seattle's World Cup frenzy

Seattle has had a banner year for a North American sports city.

Since last June, the Seahawks won the Super Bowl in football, the Mariners made the ALCS and were closer than they’ve ever been to the World Series in baseball, and the Sounders won the Leagues Cup in soccer. The Kraken and Storm are rebuilding, and the city also has the Reign and the Washington Huskies. The city’s had rumors of an NBA return swirling that could become a reality in the near future, too.

However, the United States Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT) playing a home FIFA World Cup match in Lumen Field—rebranded as “Seattle Stadium” during the tournament due to FIFA’s sponsor exclusivity rules—became one of the biggest sporting events in the city’s history last weekend.

Although the Seahawks just entered their offseason period, franchise legend Marshawn Lynch kept them well-represented ahead of Saturday’s USA vs Australia World Cup Match in the fan-led March to the Match.

Like Lynch, Seattle Sports culture became beloved by the entire nation on matchday.

Although he didn't lead the March to the Match, Russell Wilson was also in attendance and is pictured in this article with his wife, Ciara. Fellow Super Bowl 48 Champion Cliff Avril was shown with Lynch in a suite on the match's broadcast.

There were fans all over downtown Seattle’s biggest areas- the pier had a massive watch party with thousands of fans stretching across the waterfront park and up into Pike Place Market, Pacific Place and Seattle Center had watch parties that were packed; the Mariners game later that night had an attendance of 45,775, just short off T-Mobile Park’s capacity of 48,000; and Juneteenth celebrations also had people out and about.

Despite all this, there may still not have been 1 million people downtown, as there were when the Seahawks hosted their Super Bowl LX Championship parade in February. The World Cup brought in plenty of out-of-towners, but to get that sheer number of people downtown, the parade was even more effective at bringing locals out.  Seahawks game days have walked so the rarity of the World Cup Matches can run in Seattle, and the entire ecosystem benefits from its rise as an international sports city.
