A memorable 90th birthday celebration was held recently for former longtime Toronto Sun editor John Downing, who was feted by legendary cartoonist and fellow Toronto Sun Day Oner Andy Donato at the event.

Downing was editor of the Whitehorse Star in 1957, and then a reporter and editor at the Toronto Telegram from 1958 to 1971. For the Toronto Sun, he was first a city hall columnist when the paper launched on Nov. 1, 1971, and then editor from 1985 to 1997.
Downing penned 5,400 columns and 4,000 editorials during his long Sun career.
