USC men’s basketball will benefit from Dusty May leaving Michigan

On Monday, the outlook for the 2026-2026 Big Ten men’s basketball season significantly changed. After leading Michigan to a national championship this past season, it was reported that Wolverines head coach Dusty May will be departing to be the new head coach of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

Obviously, Michigan is the big loser here, as the Wolverines are losing a national champion head coach. However, some of the biggest winners of May’s departure are the other 17 Big Ten schools, including USC.
Michigan is set to visit Galen Center this upcoming season. Suddenly, what was seemingly one of the toughest games on the Trojans’ schedule now looks very different.
Obviously, a lot will happen between now and the start of the season, most notably Michigan hiring a new head coach. However, one thing is for sure: The path through the Big Ten got easier on Monday. For USC and the rest of the conference, that is a good thing.
