Jayden Daniels Taking Command of Washington's Offense

· Yahoo Sports

If there was one key takeaway from day two of minicamp for the Washington Commanders, it's that quarterback Jayden Daniels has turned the page from the 2025 season.

"Last year was last year, moving on to this season and whatever happened last year is what happened last year," Daniels said on Wednesday.

For the former Rookie of the Year who was limited to just seven appearances in 2025, it's understandable. Yet's it's the same mantra that Daniels carried into year two in Washington, though this season, there's a different workload on his plate.

The shift to a traditional NFL offense under new coordinator David Blough was expected to come with kinks to work through, which could still be the case once preseason kicks off in August. For now, there's a lot to look with confidence in the third year quarterback as head coach Dan Quinn pointed to Daniels' "ability to quickly process" as a key difference.

"There was new parts of the game that are now him outside the pocket on some spaces," Quinn said of Daniels. "That's the - I wouldn't say it's growth, but maybe some things that we haven't featured with him as much that we will now."

That space could come courtesy of either designed runs or bootlegs that won't only stretch the field, but give Daniels a chance to tap into the mobility that made him the dynamic quarterback as a rookie.

With confidence from his father, wide receiver Luke McCaffrey admitted he "can trust the purpose behind" David Blough's offense before also adding the offensive staff has been "very intentional with everything," whether it be a specific route or play design. Dyami Brown sees "more diversity" in the passing attack after being one of the two receivers highlighted by Quinn ahead of minicamp. But the chance for Daniels to lead a huddle more frequently has helped the offense also build chemistry.

"To see Jayden in the huddle, to see Jayden in all the steps. We did a lot of great things last year and the year before, but to have that intimate scene in a huddle and different things like that, it's pretty special," McCaffrey added.

Rookie Antonio Williams, who McCaffrey called "fluid" this week, will look to show signs of adjusting to an NFL route tree and playbook while Van Jefferson has flashed as "a speed guy who can stretch the field as well," according to Brown. Meanwhile, Washington worked out former Clemson receiver Justyn Ross on Wednesday to potentially add to the end of unit.

For Daniels, the chance to build chemistry with the rest of the room remains prevalent over the next two months as Daniels noted he and the receivers will "get a little trip" possibly back in California as they did earlier this offseason. Could any non-Commanders, like Brandon Aiyuk, also join him?

"We'll see. You guys will probably see on social media or something."
