SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Jason Day’s day ended early at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and there will be no more Malbon outfits to look forward to this week. The 2015 PGA Championship winner withdrew after completing 10 holes in the 126th U.S. Open, citing a back injury.
Day, 38, has battled an assortment of injuries throughout his career. He dealt with vertigo at the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay but played on. Unfortunately, on Thursday, he shot 6-over 41 on the back nine, his first nine, including six bogeys in a row, beginning at No. 13.

He made par at his final hole, No. 1, before being carted back to the clubhouse with his caddie. Day appeared to be in great discomfort when hitting his final tee shot and reached for his back. It marked the 12th time in his career that he had withdrawn from a tournament.
Day, a 13-time PGA Tour winner, was competing in his 14th U.S. Open, and was making his 14th Tour start of the season.
