The Atlanta Braves made the decision to re-sign shortstop Ha-Seong Kim to a massive $20 million deal for just one season. Kim then suffered an injury during the offseason after slipping on ice.

Since returning, Kim has struggled mightily at the plate. In fact, he is now batting under .100 after striking out twice in his most recent game.

“Ha-Seong Kim is hitting .086 (5-for-58) with no XBHs and a 25% K rate through the first five innings of his 18th game. He'd become just the 17th Braves position player to hit below .100 through 18 games,” Braves reporter Mark Bowman wrote.

Unfortunately, most of Kim’s hits this season have come via drag bunts, which is not typically what teams want from an everyday starter. As a result, there are voices around the organization calling for backup shortstop Jorge Mateo to receive more at-bats for Atlanta.

“Ha-Seong Kim has played in just 6 of the Braves' last 16 games and gone 1-for-17 in those limited looks. With Ronald Acuña out and Michael Harris dealing with a back issue, Mauricio Dubón is needed in the OF, but there's little reason not to give Jorge Mateo the AB's at SS,” Braves reporter Grant McAuley wrote.

Kim was also booed on Wednesday following some of his plate appearances, as Braves fans made their frustrations clear. After the game, manager Walt Weiss tempered expectations, saying Kim would continue to receive opportunities.

“There's no secret sauce or anything to get guys through their struggles. I mean, he works every day. We've had multiple conversations and he's just trying to find his way. It's been a struggle for him. I'm sure he's more frustrated than anybody. But I'm going to continue to mix and match and see if he can find his way. You know, the other guys are going to get opportunities, too. That's all we can do,” Weiss said.

The Braves front office does not appear willing to let Weiss move on from Kim, which could signal they are reluctant to bench a player making that type of money. This has become a rare misstep for general manager Alex Anthopoulos.

Mateo has had some productive stretches at the plate this season and has looked like a better option than Kim at times. Still, it is disappointing for some that Kim continues to receive opportunities despite struggling to consistently produce offensively.
