The France vs Senegal World Cup match brought a global soccer crowd into the stadium Manning once called home.
This time, the former quarterback was not scanning defenses or leading a huddle, he was watching from the stands with his son beside him.
The moment gave New York sports fans a simple crossover, one of their most recognizable athletes back in an old setting for a new kind of football.

During the match, a post shared by SportsCenter on X showed Manning talking his son through the action unfolding below.
“Former Giants QB Eli Manning explaining tactics to his son at France vs. Senegal in his old stadium?” SC wrote on X.
The caption worked because Manning’s ties to the venue are obvious. He spent all 16 seasons of his NFL career with the Giants, won two Super Bowls and became one of the franchise’s defining players.
Seeing him back at MetLife for a World Cup match gave the scene a different feel. Manning was no longer reading an NFL defense from the field, he was part of the crowd watching another version of football take over his old home.
Eli Manning’s World Cup appearance made MetLife Stadium crossover feel natural
France beat Senegal 3-1 in their Group I opener at New York/New Jersey Stadium, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice and Bradley Barcola adding another goal.
Senegal’s response came through Ibrahim Mbaye in stoppage time, but the night belonged to France and to the local crowd watching one of the tournament’s biggest teams begin their campaign.
Manning’s appearance did not come out of nowhere. He had already been involved in promoting the 2026 World Cup, including work around the tournament draw, and had spoken about wanting to bring his family to the France vs Senegal match.
That made the clip feel less like a random celebrity sighting and more like a fitting local handoff. A Giants icon returned to MetLife, only this time he was explaining soccer instead of commanding a huddle.
