Based on the latest crime statistics from the South African Police Service (SAPS), Alexandra township currently stands as a hot bed for carjacking.

STATS BREAKDOWN

Most recently, SAPS released their latest crime statistics for the fourth quarter of 2025/26. This quarter covers the months of January 2026 to March 2026.

During this period, 3 609 carjackings were reported across South Africa. This is 924 fewer than the previous year (4 533 carjackings).

However, Alexandra has seen nearly 100 carjackings over the course of this three-month period, ranking above 29 other national locales affected by this crime.

According to SAPS, Alexandra station recorded 63 carjacking cases between January 2026 and March 2026.

This is virtually double the figure (31 cases) reported by the station between January 2026 and March 2026. It’s an alarming indicator of the upward trajectory of vehicle-related crimes in the area.

In addition to Alexandra being the national leader in carjackings, the township holds the top provincial position. Other high-placed Gauteng contenders include Kempton Park, Ivory Park and Eldorado Park.

Alexandra is also plagued by other worrying crimes that are on the rise: murder cases crept from 22 to 31, attempted murder cases climbed from 27 to 44, and kidnapping cases jumped from 16 to 33.

SAFEGUARD YOURSELF

Carjacking is a harrowing ordeal. Whether you’re travelling through areas like Alexandra or even affluent locales, it’s important for you to implement measures that will protect you from potential hijackers.

When driving, be sure to keep in mind the following tips:

  • Be mindful when entering driveways in residential areas. These are prime vulnerable spots for hijackers to strike.
  • Reverse park against walls in shopping centre parking lots to prevent sneak attacks from behind.
  • Approach intersections slowly without coming to a full stop.
  • Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front. This allows you to carry out emergency exit manoeuvres when stopping.
  • If you suspect that you’re being followed, change your route immediately and head to the nearest police station for safety.
  • Secure your vehicle by locking its doors. Manually pull the door handle to ensure that it hasn’t been car-jammed.
  • Stay vigilant of your surroundings at all times. Avoid distractions, such as checking your cellphone.

As always, folks, stay safe out there!
