Forgotten Bafana Bafana star a wanted man in Saudi

· The South African

Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana has reportedly attracted interest from several clubs in Saudi Arabia as uncertainty continues to surround his future.

The 26-year-old former Sekhukhune United star was left out of South Africa’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Having featured prominently in the previous two AFCON campaigns, Mokwana’s recent form was not enough to earn him a place in Hugo Broos’ final squad.

Mokwana joined Tunisian giants Espérance in 2024 and made 25 appearances, scoring three goals before being loaned out to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hazem.

With his future at Espérance appearing uncertain, the winger could be on the move again ahead of next season as he looks to revive his career and force his way back into the Bafana Bafana setup.

According to Soccer Laduma, several Saudi clubs are monitoring his situation.

“Mokwana will not be going back to Espérance. He is currently on loan at Al-Hazem, who hold an option to sign him permanently,” a source told Soccer Laduma.

“While Al-Hazem have the first option, two other Saudi clubs have also expressed interest in signing him.”

Mokwana not in the Bafana World Cup squad

Despite scoring just one goal in 24 appearances for Al-Hazem, the Saudi club are reportedly keen to make his move permanent. The interest from other clubs could, however, spark a battle for the South African international’s signature.

A permanent move to Saudi Arabia could offer Mokwana the stability and regular game time he needs to rediscover the form that once made him one of Bafana Bafana’s most exciting attacking players.
