NEW YORK — In the afterglow of the Knicks' NBA title, Carlos Mendoza was left to ponder about the type of impact that bringing a World Series title could mean to a specific class of New York fans.

The Knicks jolted the city to life with the first basketball championship since 1973. Mendoza tasted a little bit of that reception when the Mets made a run to the National League Championship Series in 2024.
"You watch what the Knicks were able to do and in my seat what we're trying to do here, day in and day out, it's special, not going to lie," Mendoza said. "Every day you show up with that goal in mind."
The Mets are a long ways away from achieving anything remotely close. They enter Sunday afternoon with a 31-39 record, 15 games behind the first-place Braves in the NL East and 5.5 back of the Padres for the final NL Wild Card spot.
A step in the right direction would simply be taking the series against the Braves, who hold the best record in Major League Baseball at 46-24. The Mets have that chance in the series finale at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday at Citi Field.
Freddy Peralta will need to get back on track for the Mets to achieve that goal. The right-hander allowed six earned runs in six innings against the Cardinals last time out to slip to 4-5 on the season.
The Mets will also have to solve Braves right-hander Bryce Elder, who enters the day with a 5-3 record and 2.66 ERA. Elder has notched five quality starts in his last seven outings. He held the Pirates to two earned runs in six innings last time out and the Blue Jays to three earned runs in 6⅔ innings in the start before that.
