The fifth seeded North Carolina Tar Heels scored five runs in the seventh and eighth inning to surge past Ole Miss, 6-2, in Friday’s College World Series opening day.

Rebels pitcher Taylor Rabe pitched about as well as anyone has in the red and blue all season going 5.2 innings allowing only one run, a solo homer. The bullpen, however, could not stop a flurry of runs from the Tar Heels capped by a three run dinger in the eighth. Ole Miss pitching overall gave up six walks in the game, which kept innings and UNC alive.

Ole Miss will now have to face Troy in an elimination game on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.

There just simply was not enough offense for the Rebels to have a chance in this one. UNC can very obviously manufacture runs through small ball and can go yard, so two runs was never going to get it done.

Dom Decker and Judd Utermark were responsible for the two RBI’s in the game, but the middle of the order of Will Furniss, Tristan Bissetta and Hayden Federico went a combined 0 for 10 with two walks and four strikeouts.

You’d have to expect Hunter Elliott to pitch next for Ole Miss in an elimination scenario. Troy showed it was more than capable of scoring runs against West Virginia in a 7-5 loss. Ole Miss now has a very long road to make it back to a CWS final.

Head coach Mike Bianco has been in a similar situation though when the 2014 CWS played out. The Rebels lost its opening game to Virginia then eliminated both Texas Tech and TCU en route to a rematch with the Cavaliers. UVA finished off the Rebels in the final four that postseason.

This bracket on paper looks more manageable however. You’d like to think as an Ole Miss fan wins can come against Troy and most likely West Virginia over the next few days, but if there is anything this postseason of college baseball has taught us its to expect the unexpected.
