Caleb Williams on moment he got comfortable in Ben Johnson's offense

Although they had success early in the season during the first year together in 2025, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams didn't feel he was on the same page with his head coach Ben Johnson until later in the season.

Williams, who had a terrific second-season in the NFL while working with Johnson during his first year as Bears head coach, set the franchise single-season passing yards record, led the team to an 11-win season and NFC North title, and took his team to the divisional playoffs, having defeated the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round.

Recently, Williams appeared on the "New Heights" podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, and discussed his growing relationship with Johnson, revealing it took quite a bit of time until he felt comfortable with his new head coach. Williams told the Kelce brothers that even while the Bears were finding ways to win early in the season, he didn't feel as if he was finding his groove with his new head coach until the Week 11 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.

"It took until the second Vikings game in Week 11 to get on the same page with Ben Johnson," Williams said. "Yeah, I mean, you obviously get to a comfort level throughout camp, and then you get into a game and it’s like f---, this is a little different. You got obviously different bodies flying around, different checks, different alerts, different, you know, hand signals and all these different things that apply for just that week and so being in this offense and a bunch of motions, a bunch of shifts, we shift and motion, I mean every play … you have to. It’s a positive for us."

Williams had plenty to learn on the fly with his new head coach last season, and while it took some time to get to a correct comfort level, the pairing brought plenty of success to the Bears franchise. Now looking towards this 2026 season, both the quarterback and head coach will look to build off their success and maintain relevance as one of the top contending teams in the NFC.
