U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey, Louisville's congressman, was named Most Valuable Player for the Democrats in this year's Congressional Baseball Game for Charity, which took place June 10 at Nationals Park.
McGarvey, who wore a Bellarmine University jersey in his debut in 2023, played catcher and was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 on the night, including a deep drive to left field in the fourth inning that bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double.
The strong showing at the plate was enough to earn him MVP honors. But it was a rare bright spot for McGarvey's team — the Democrats fell 11-2 to the Republicans, who have now won six in a row in the annual series, a bipartisan event that benefits a list of charities including the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, the Washington Nationals Philanthropies and the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund.
McGarvey deferred in April when a TMZ reporter asked him about the best player on the team, pointing toward U.S. Rep. Chris Deluzio of Pennsylvania. McGarvey had a big hit during the game in 2025 as well, he recalled.
"I have definitely ridden that from last year," McGarvey joked before referencing an old "Seinfeld" episode. "It makes me not want to play this thing — do the George Costanza thing and end on a high note."
The TMZ reporter floated the idea at the time of allowing the game's MVP to be able to pass one bill without objection. McGarvey was hesitant at the time, but in hindsight he'd probably support the proposal.
