Toronto residents living in certain suburban areas are more likely to have higher auto insurance premiums.

That’s according to tens of thousands of auto insurance quotes submitted last year to a Toronto-based insurance technology company and broken down by postal codes in the city.

The analysis comes on the heels of alarming news that Toronto Police’s Traffic Unit has recorded a 28% increase in fatal collisions — a five-year high — so far this year when compared to the same time frame in 2025.

“Toronto’s recent increase in traffic fatalities highlights the importance of understanding where collision risk is concentrated,” MyChoice Insurance CEO Aren Mirzaian said in a statement.

“While every crash has different causes, the data shows that some neighbourhoods consistently experience higher accident rates than others, which is one reason insurers look closely at postal code when assessing risk.”

50,000 auto insurance quotes analyzed

The company said an analysis was done of more than 50,000 auto insurance quotes collected through its platform in 2025 to identify which Toronto postal codes have the highest concentration of drivers with accidents on their record.

According to the results, there are significant differences in collision risk across the city.

The highest recorded collision rate was located in Etobicoke’s Westmount neighbourhood with the postal code M9P, with 16.7% of drivers reporting an accident on their record.

Scarborough’s Upper Rouge postal code M1X was ranked second with a 13.5% collision rate, followed by 12% for M9R in Etobicoke’s Richview and Kingsview areas.

Other high accident rates were recorded in the postal codes M8V in Etobicoke’s Humber Bay and Mimico areas and M1H in Scarborough’s Cedarbrae neighbourhood, each with 11.9%.

Lowest accident rate in downtown

Meanwhile, the lowest accident rate in the city was located within the M5J postal code in Harbourfront and CityPlace, with just 3.8% of drivers reporting collisions.

The analysis calculated an average of an 8.6% accident rate across the city.

“The findings help illustrate how collision risk can vary dramatically within the same city and why postal code remains one of the most important factors affecting auto insurance premiums,” the company said.

The average auto insurance rate this year in Toronto is $2,348, slightly lower than Markham’s $2,364 average, the company said.

However, Toronto’s rate was more than $350 higher than Vaughan’s $2,705 and more than $1,100 above the $3,471 Brampton residents are paying.

Drivers who live in postal codes with higher accident rates can lower their insurance premiums by keeping a clean driving record, taking a defensive driving course, or installing a dashcam, the company said.
