The former professional basketball player has come out to trash unfounded theories that the president’s appearance at the Knicks game on June 8 cost them their loss against the Spurs.

Charles Barkley was equally in the news for his controversial comments about rapper Cardi B’s body during her performance at Madison Square Garden in the presence of Donald Trump.

The NBA alum addressed a few things after the final basket was thrown in Game 3 on Monday, June 8. Barkley immediately dismissed the narrative being peddled that Trump’s presence in that arena played a role in the result, where his favorite team lost.

Barkley stressed that it does not work that way and that the outcome of the game was purely basketball-related, which saw the Spurs playing a much better game than the Knicks.

Trump had made history that night as the first sitting president of the United States to attend an NBA finals game as he watched from a suite at MSG alongside the Knicks owner James Dolan and his granddaughter Kai Trump.

According to TMZ, by the end of the night, the Knicks ultimately fell 115–111 as the Spurs cut into New York’s Finals lead.

Trump’s visit to the area also came with noticeably tighter security around the arena as fans were encouraged to arrive early, pass through airport-style screening, and navigate barriers around Madison Square Garden.

Clearing the air about Trump was not the only thing on Barkley’s agenda for the night, as he also gave a response to his now-viral “Cardi D” moment during the halftime show on Inside the NBA.

The former NBA player laughed off the attention that surrounded the statement, insisting that he was simply having fun in the moment and did not mean to harass the rapper or come off as disrespectful. 

As shared by Page Six, Barkley had social media buzzing after making a playful but controversial remark about the rapper during her halftime performance at Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals.

The chapter unfolded as Cardi B appeared on stage at Madison Square Garden to perform her hit songs “Bodega Baddie” and “Bodak Yellow” alongside the Knicks City Dancers.

As the performance began, “Inside the NBA” host Ernie Johnson noted that the show had plenty of competition for attention while the Knicks held a seven-point lead and looked to take a commanding series advantage.

Barkley broke in with a joke, telling the broadcast team that they had already lost that battle and then made a cheeky remark about Cardi’s breasts that got his co-hosts Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal cracking up.

In his words, “I don’t know if those B’s. They might be Cardi D’s. I’m pretty sure those aren’t B’s. She’s got the wrong initials.” Johnson immediately distanced himself from the remark, joking that he definitely was not the one behind it.

The politician had revealed that his presence at MSG for the game was facilitated by Dolan, who extended an invitation to him, and now he may also be considering making an appearance for game 4.

Following the revelation, some NBA stars from the team who faced off for game 3 shared their thoughts before slugging it out on the court.

As stated by PEOPLE, shortly before the game started, Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox admitted that Trump’s presence in the environment indeed created extra hurdles around MSG alongside heightened security. Fox added that the security situation made entry for the players and fans difficult, but they would adjust. 

As for Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns, he clarified that his focus was to deliver a worthy finals performance to their dedicated fans and give them something to rally behind after displaying loyalty all season.

His teammate, OG Anunoby, reassured interviewers that Trump being in the area would not affect their gameplay, as everything was locked down for the Knicks to take charge of the game and bring victory home. 

NBA commissioner Adam Silver was more upbeat about Trump’s attendance, describing it as part of the excitement surrounding the NBA Finals. Silver connected Trump’s history as a Knicks fan pre-politics and his current status as the number 1 citizen in America as the perfect crowd magnet for the game.

The politician put a positive spin on the very controversial atmosphere that trailed his appearance on the big screen at the venue where he spent time with the Knicks owner and his granddaughter in the suite.

As reported by The Blast, Trump was also spotted indulging in pizza and fries as the game went on, alongside a quick nap before he exited the venue.

On his way out, he explained to reporters that he only heard cheers from the crowd, which was a sign of support and way different from the booing that social media users had claimed filled the air when he saluted the “star spangled banner” during the anthem.

Trump has now joined the league of American presidents who have been spotted enjoying the ambiance at several sports in America; however, he has managed to stay on top of the list as one of the most controversial.
