The New York Knicks need just two victories to break their nearly five-decade streak of failing to capture a title, and the fans at Madison Square Garden are looking forward to witnessing one of the most important moments in the team’s history. But the Game 3 clash between the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs has brought a new element into focus.

Since President Donald Trump is due to attend the clash on Monday evening, the preparation of security at Madison Square Garden has been quite heightened. The large gathering that fans were initially looking forward to witnessing near the stadium will now have to cope with tight security, turning it into an odd scene for what could be the greatest Knicks game in years.

Knicks Cancel Game 3 Watch Parties As Donald Trump’s Attendance Triggers Major Security Lockdown

President Donald J. Trump is cheered by the crowd as he leaves a rally in the fieldhouse at Rockland Community College May 22, 2026.

According to Knicks PR, all Game 3 watch parties planned outside Madison Square Garden have been canceled because of President Trump’s attendance. Multiple reports, on June 7, indicated that authorities are preparing extensive security measures around the arena, with hard closures expected throughout the surrounding area.

The restrictions go well beyond canceling fan events. Vehicle access will be heavily limited, pedestrian movement around secured zones will be restricted, and fans attending the game are being urged to arrive at least two hours before tipoff due to enhanced screening procedures. Trump confirmed last week that he would attend Game 3 after receiving an invitation from the Knicks owner James Dolan. If he takes his seat courtside Monday night, he will become the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game in person.

The Knicks have also announced a strict no-bag policy and airport-style security screenings at Madison Square Garden. Reports say that police and local law enforcement have been getting ready for days with security measures like magnetometers, traffic controls, air support, and Secret Service agents around the arena.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver talked about the security while speaking before the series went back to New York.

The timing of the visit is also making this moment even bigger for the Knicks. They are playing Game 3 with a 2-0 lead over San Antonio. Have won 13 straight playoff games. The Knicks want their NBA championship since 1973 and are hosting their first Finals game at Madison Square Garden since 1999. Some people, including fans and officials are worried that all the attention on the President could take away from the team’s moment.

But one thing is for sure: on Monday night the focus won’t just be on the game. The Knicks are trying to win a championship and Madison Square Garden is getting ready for one of the secure sporting events, in New York in years.
