Top Red Sox Prospect Emerges as Leading Brayan Bello Replacement

· Yahoo Sports

After another disastrous start against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, the Boston Red Sox demoted 27-year-old right-hander Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester.

Bello surrendered six total runs in the first inning alone, and by the time the dust settled, he’d given up eight earned runs over five innings.

Boston ultimately fell 8-2 at home in a disastrous performance that left interim manager Chad Tracy at a loss for words

But the implosion on the mound wasn’t even the most memorable part of the night.

When asked after the game whether a temporary demotion to the minors might help, Bello pushed back hard. “I’m not thinking about that,” he said. “I’m thinking about making my adjustments in the big leagues. I have a big league contract. That doesn’t mean that the bosses will not take that into consideration, but I’m a big leaguer. I’m a big league starting pitcher, and I’ll make my adjustments here.”

Bello is owed $8.7 million next year, before a dramatic climb to $16.2 million in 2028, and $19.2 million in 2029.

The Red Sox, clearly, felt a change was needed.

Now, with Boston sitting at 25-36 and staring down a critical road stretch, Jake Bennett is considered a strong candidate to fill Bello’s spot in the rotation, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com.

The 25-year-old left-hander is currently back at Triple-A Worcester, and his numbers there have been impressive. He’s posted a 3-2 record in nine appearances with a 1.60 ERA and 41 strikeouts.

Drafted out of Oklahoma in the second round in 2022 by the Washington Nationals, Bennett enjoyed a strong pro debut before Tommy John surgery in September 2023 cost him all of the following season.

He made a successful return in 2025, posting a 2.27 ERA and 64 strikeouts across 19 appearances with the Double-A Harrisburg Senators.

The Red Sox then acquired him from Washington in December, trading pitching prospect Luis Perales to get him.

He made his MLB debut on May 1 against the Houston Astros, striking out Yordan Alvarez with a 95 mph sinker for his first major league strikeout in a 3-1 Red Sox win.

Boston faces the New York Yankees on Friday and Saturday before closing out the series on Sunday afternoon.

It’s a brutal stretch against a division rival to navigate without the rotation fully settled, and Bennett isn’t expected to get the call up until Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays.
