David Edwards likes what he's seen from Saints QB Tyler Shough

· Yahoo Sports

David Edwards has blocked for some of the best quarterbacks in today's NFL, having started his career protecting Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford on the Los Angeles Rams before joining Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. Now, he's charged with manning the left guard spot for the New Orleans Saints to help Tyler Shough take a big jump in Year 2.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. caught most of the headlines after signing with the Saints in free agency, but Edwards received more guarantees ($30 million) and more money per year ($15.25 million). As his new teammate Erik McCoy alluded to, Edwards could be the offensive line's missing piece. The Saints have high expectations for him.

Louisiana First News' Sara Palczewski caught up with Edwards after the Saints' recent OTAs practice session, who shared his take on how Shough compares to the other quarterbacks he's blocked for.

"I think there's a lot of similarities between Matthew, Jared, Josh, and Tyler," Edwards began. "I think one thing that's really important is the character and the mindset mentality that they have. They have a very common theme within themselves from Tyler to Stafford to Josh. And then, you know, I mentioned this a few times but Tyler has a really unique ability to use his feet, his arm, and his mind to beat people, very similar to those previous guys I've played with. So I think he has all the tools to be a really successful guy in this league. It's gonna be exciting to be a part of his growth and his journey."

Edwards was careful to point to Shough's shared traits being the point of comparison with those quarterbacks -- he isn't an MVP like Stafford and Allen, at least not yet. But when it comes to navigating pressure in the pocket, escaping out into the open field and picking up yards, and making throws from a variety of angles and launch points? It's there. Maybe having more consistent protection on the left side helps Shough step up and meet his potential in 2026.
