When their 18-batter parade had finally ended, the Yanks had tallied 13 runs, one run shy of the franchise record for runs in one inning.
After erasing a three-run deficit, the Yankees completed a 13-8 win against the Athletics, finishing a 5-1 road trip that began with a three-game sweep at Kansas City.
Starting with a soft single to center by Anthony Volpe, the Yankees’ 43-minute half-inning against three A’s pitchers – lefty starter Jacob Lopez, righties Michael Kelly and Jack Perkins – saw them collect 11 hits.
In batting around twice, the Yanks saw Ben Rice record a two-run double and a two-run triple, while former A’s infielder Max Schuemann hit a two-run double.
There were 10 runs scored before the A’s recorded an out, and the Yanks also had four walks and four stolen bases in the frame - with two steals by Volpe.
It ended with Trent Grisham (who had a two-run single earlier in inning) flying out with runners at the corners.
That's how close the Yankees came to setting a new franchise record, putting in jeopardy a nearly 106-year-old mark.
On July 6, 1920, the Yanks - with a lineup that featured 25-year-old Babe Ruth - scored 14 runs in the fifth inning of a 17-0 win at Washington.
On Sunday, the Yankees saw the first 12 batters of the third inning reach base safely. Per MLB.com, the Yanks' 10 runs scored before an out was recorded was the club's most in one inning since at least 1974.
Their last 13-run inning was in 2005, when the Yanks accomplished the feat twice against the Tampa Bay Rays.
