McGregor Vs. Holloway 2 Reportedly Stalled By Main Event Stipulation

An official announcement for Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return fight appears imminent, but it may not come in time to spoil tonight’s Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano superfight on Netflix.
According to a report by the New York Post, a deal between Conor McGregor and Max Holloway is expected to be finalized for UFC 329 on July 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada, over the next week. Some originally speculated that UFC CEO Dana White has been planning to announce the return of “Notorious” this weekend in effort to take some shine away from a feisty Rousey. That would be pretty savage on behalf of UFC, but pettier things have happened in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Earlier this week, long-time MMA reporter, Ariel Helwani, revealed that a McGregor vs. Holloway rematch was “on the goal line,” but that didn’t give fight fans a ton of information to work with. Friday’s report by New York Post provided some extra details for McGregor’s potential UFC comeback, which has been nearly five years in the making following his last fight in July 2021.
Per New York Post, McGregor vs. Holloway is expected to take place at 170 pounds. Many expected that to be the case given how big McGregor gets when he’s not fighting, but this will be Holloway’s first appearance at welterweight. The former UFC featherweight champion just moved up to lightweight last year and has produced a 1-1 record ever since, most recently losing his “BMF” title to Charles Oliveira at UFC 326.
In addition, it appears McGregor’s Team is still pushing hard for his return fight to be three rounds instead of five. Keep in mind, McGregor vs. Holloway 2 would certainly be asked to headline UFC’s International Fight Week this July. As we all know, UFC main events are five rounds with rarely any exceptions. McGregor would be one of the only fighters to get such an exception, but it begs the question if “Notorious” is in the best shape he can be for his return.
Only time will tell when McGregor’s return will be made official, but it sounds like it could happen at any point over the next week.
