Softball tournament roundup leads with three Marion-area teams winning

Three Marion-area softball teams earned OHSAA tournament opening victories on May 13.

May 13
- Elgin went on the road as the No. 8 seed and knocked off No. 6 Tree of Life 19-7 in a Division VI game where the Comets were up 9-6 before blowing it open with a 10-run sixth inning. Madison Hill tossed a five-hitter with three earned runs, no walks and 11 strikeouts, plus she hit a triple and two singles to score four runs and drive in three. Graceylynn Edmonstone added a triple and double for four RBIs. Destiny Frye, Hayleigh Lowther and Mallorie Hempy all singled twice as Melody Hicks doubled and Cobra Jackson scored three runs. Elgin will play at No. 3 Grandview Heights Tuesday, May 19 at 5 p.m. in a district semifinal.
- No. 5 Cardington rolled to a 22-0 win over No. 12 Wellington in a Division VI game as Myleigh Bishop pitched a five-inning no-hitter with two walks and eight strikeouts. Celia Hall led at the plate with a home run, triple, singled, three runs and three RBIs followed by Blake Cronin with a homer and double, Kayden Burchett with a triple, double and three runs, Maddy Toombs with a triple and double, Alexis Longsdorf and Lana Littlemeyer with two singles and Bishop with three runs. The Pirates will play at No. 4 Berne Union May 19 at 5 p.m. in a district semifinal.
- No. 10 Mount Gilead held off East Knox 16-10 in a Division VI game where MG led 12-2 after three innings. MG's Livie Brannon hit a home run, double and single for six RBIs, as Charlie Brannon singled twice, and Makayla McKenzie scored three runs. McKenlee Bump scattered 10 hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. MG will play at No. 1 Danville May 19 at 5 p.m. in a district semifinal.
- In a Division VII game, No. 2 Madison Christian led 5-0 early and kept it for a 5-3 win over No. 5 Ridgedale. The Rockets scored all their runs in the top of the fifth inning. They were held to four hits as Kiley Slone went 3-for-3 and Adyson Thomas tripled in two runs. Slone pitched, striking out seven, walking three and allowing seven hits.
