Injured Seattle Mariners Starting Pitcher to Return Against Houston Astros

The Seattle Mariners got closer to returning to full strength when third baseman/utility player Brendan Donovan was activated off the injured list before a game against the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

That game, which the Mariners won 12-8, marked the first of a seven-game road trip and a stretch of 13 consecutive games without a day off for the M's.

And it looks like Seattle will be getting another boost, this time to the pitching staff, with the impending return of another injured player.

Per a post on "X" from Seattle Times reporter Ryan Divish, right-handed starting pitcher Bryce Miller will be activated off the injured list and will start in a game against the Houston Astros on Wednesday at Daikin Park in Houston.

The game Miller will start will be the third of a four-game series between the two American League West foes.

Miller has been out the entire season on the 15-day injured list due to a left oblique strain he suffered in spring training.

The former Texas A&M product began a rehab assignment on April 18 and rotated starts with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers and High-A Everett AquaSox to get reacclimated to pitching in the Pacific Northwest.

Miller finished his rehab assignment with a 1.98 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 13.2 innings pitched across four starts with the two minor league clubs. He allowed three earned runs in his first rehab outing and didn't allow a score in his three outings after.

Miller's last outing was for Everett in a game against the Hillsboro Hops on May 6. He fanned two, walked three and allowed two hits in five innings pitched.

Per Divish's reporting, the Mariners will go a full turn through a six-man rotation with the reintroduction of Miller.

That full turn will begin Sunday with Logan Gilbert's start in the series finale against the Chicago White Sox. After that, George Kirby and Bryan Woo will start the first two games against the Astros on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

Luis Castillo and Emerson Hancock will have their starts bumped back a day Thursday and Friday, respectively, for Miller to be inserted into the rotation Wednesday. This would have Castillo starting the series finale against Houston on Thursday and Hancock on the mound for the first of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Friday back at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

Once the team is a full way through the six-man rotation, Seattle will return to a five-man rotation and piggyback Castillo and Miller with each other.

The Mariners will look to clinch the series win against Chicago in game two of the three-game set at 4:10 p.m. PT on Saturday at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.
