Some players on the New York Yankees have found out the hard way that if they don't play well, there are other guys in the organization who will do what's needed to win at the highest level. As a result, they typically get replaced.
The latest that happened to was Anthony Volpe, who was optioned to Triple-A.
With Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole returning at some point, whether that be in the next few days for Rodon or in a month for Cole, there will definitely be an impact on some guys in the rotation.
According to the latest, somebody like Ryan Weathers or Will Warren will likely be moved to the bullpen because of that.
“When Rodón returns, the Yankees will likely send Elmer Rodríguez back to the minor leagues. If everyone remains healthy when Cole is ready, Ryan Weathers or Will Warren will probably go to the bullpen. Weathers is the likely choice, as he completed only 38 1/3 innings last season; he’s already at 38 2/3 innings this year. Weathers has been an effective backend starter, ranking highly in strikeout and walk percentages, but there’s only so much space in the rotation,” Chris Kirschner of The Athletic wrote.
I say moving to the bullpen is a downgrade because guys definitely want to be starters in Major League Baseball, no matter how anybody wants to spin it.
Starters get paid a lot more money, and for somebody like Warren or Weathers, who should play long enough to reach free agency and get a decent payday, that should have an impact on them. However, this is the right decision from the Yankees when it eventually happens, which is what the organization has to focus on.
