PREP ROUNDUP: Hatton's Armstead sets record at state meet

May 2—GULF SHORES — Hatton's Eva Armstead set a new Class 4A-7A outdoor state meet record on Friday, winning the girls Class 4A 400 meters with a time of 53.31.

Armstead's mark was more than 2.5 seconds better than Anniston's Liberty Lewis and ranks among the top 15 times clocked among high school runners in the United States in 2026, according to the AHSAA.

Armstead's performance highlighted a good day for local athletes at the outdoor state championships. The class 4A-7A meet is being held at the Gulf Shores Municipal Track, while the class 1A-3A meet is taking place in Cullman.

Decatur's Kennedy Parham won the girls Class 6A 400-meter championship with a time of 56.46, while a pair of Athens Bible School teammates also won individual gold.

Meredith Romans finished first in the girls Class 1A discus throw with a long toss of 126-10, while Kaylie Key won the girls Class 1A 1600 meters with a time of 5:18.72.

Tanner's Dalyrik Malone finished second in the girls Class 2A 400 meters with a time of 1:01.37 and Athens Bible's KayLeigh Gaines recorded a distance 16-02.75 to finish third in the girls Class 1A long jump.

In addition to her record-setting win in the 400 meters, Armstead collected a second-place finish in the Class 4A long jump with a final distance of 18-07.00. East Lawrence's Analeah King finished third in the event with a 16-02.75.

Hartselle's Chassidy Verser was second in the girls Class 6A discus with a long throw of 123-05 and East Lawrence's Isabella Wright finished second in the girls Class 4A 3200 meters with a time of 11:41.57.

Lawrence County's Katie Mae Coan (10:58.86) and Brewer's Rose Betts (11:08.25) finished second and third in the girls Class 5A 3200 meters.

State meets wrap up Saturday.

Softball

Class 5A, Area 16

Ardmore 7, Brewer 5: Ardmore scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead and held on for the win.

Sulivan Smith had two hits and one RBI for the Tigers, while Makena Hall, Fallon Broadway, Briley Jo Lawhorn and Piper Abbott added one hit and one RBI each. Broadway pitched five innings for the win.

Mackenzie Irmen went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs for Brewer. Taylor Pellem homered, singled and drove in a run and Karli Stanton had a pair of singles.

East Limestone 6, Priceville 1: Abby Thompson pitched a complete game for East Limestone, allowing just one run on five hits over seven innings.

Kailey Matthews, tripled, doubled and drove in a run for the Indians, while Grace Bielat added a pair of singles and one RBI. Scarlett Brown hit a solo home run.

Brooklyn Tucker had two hits and one RBI to lead Priceville.

Ardmore 8, East Limestone 4: Ardmore will play for the area championship Saturday after Kadence Wiliams went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for the Tigers.

Broadway homered and drove in a pair of runs, while Smith added two hits and one RBI. Lawhorn pitched 4 2/3 innings for the win, striking out two.

Matthews had two hits, including a double, and one RBI for East Limestone. Presley McMunn had three hits, including a double, and Mahaley Lassie and Lila Schmidt had one hit and one RBI each.

Ardmore will play in the championship round at 2 p.m. East Limestone will face the winner of Brewer-Priceville in an elimination game at noon.

Class 4A, Area 14

Brooks 9, Hatton 7: Hatton scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't complete a rally in an opening-round loss.

Bella Huff tripled and drove in two runs for the Hornets, while Zailyn Williamson added two hits and one RBI. Adley Brackin had a single and one Rbi, while Lexi Kilpatrick and Celia Murray finished with two hits each.

Hatton will begin elimination play at 10 a.m. on Monday against the loser of Friday's game between Deshler and Wilson.

Class 3A, Area 16

Colbert County 10, Clements 0: Colbert County's Makayli Davis tossed a complete-game shutout in the tournament opener, allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts.

Zailey Moran had a pair of hits, including a double, for the Colts. Hayslee DuBose had one hit.

Rogers 14, Clements 4: Peyten Burks had a pair of hits, including a double, and one RBI as the Clements' season came to an end.

Olivia Moody had two hits for the Colts and Aubrey Hall drove in one run.

Class 3A, Area 15

Whitesburg Christian 4, Elkmont 1: Dixee Bentley drove in Elkmont's lone run in the tournament opener. Avery Harwell had two hits for the Red Devils.

Class 2A, Area 14

Lindsay Lane 3, Tharptown 0: Charleigh Reding tossed a no-hitter for Lindsay Lane, striking out seven over seven innings with one hit batter.

Reding also singled twice and drove in a run for the Lions, while Maggie Wallace and Aubrey Burgreen added one RBI each. Madison Lee had three hits.

Lexington 5, Lindsay Lane 4: A walk-off sacrifice fly gave Lexington the win and bumped Lindsay Lane into Saturday's elimination round.

Wallace had two hits, including a double, and one RBI for Lindsay Lane, while Lee added a hit and one RBI. Burgreen drove in one run.

Lindsay Lane will face Tharptown at noon with championship play scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Class 1A, Area 16

Athens Bible School 15, Covenant Christian 0: Hadley Robison went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs in a big win for Athens Bible.

Addie Tucker had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Trojans, while Alyssa Butler added two hits and one RBI. Kate Gwin singled and drove in two runs and Destiny Burns pitched three shutout innings for the win, allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts.

Athens Bible will continue play Saturday against Waterloo at 9 a.m.

Baseball

East Limestone 4, Lincoln 0: Coleby Davis tossed a complete-game shutout to propel East Limestone into next week's Class 5A quarterfinals.

The Indians will face American Christian Academy in a best-of-3 series next week. American Christian advanced with a 2-0 sweep of Russellville in the second round.

Davis was dominant on the mound on Friday, allowing two hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out four.

Alex Adkins and Cade Parham had one hit each for East Limestone, while Brodie Coker added a pair of singles.
