One of the most controversial names in horse racing has returned for the second year in a row after a three-year absence from the sport.

Bob Baffert was suspended from horse racing after 2021 Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, a horse that he trained, failed a drug test.

He was initially given a two-year suspension, but had another year tacked on for continuing to "peddle a false narrative" by claiming that he had done nothing wrong. The horse died seven months after its win and was stripped of its title two months after its death.

Baffert is tied with Ben Jones for the most Kentucky Derby wins all-time with six. Baffert had a less than stellar performance in 2025, with his one horse, Citizen Bull, finishing 15/19.

This year, there's two new Baffert-trained horses in the race. Here's what to know about his stellar stallions.

Baffert has two horses in this year's Kentucky Derby, Litmus Test and Potente.

Litmus Test

Baffert's first horse comes from strong blood, as his sire is 2016 Kentucky Derby champion Nyquist. There are concerns, however, that Litmus Test is a major unknown. Hence, this upcoming race can be described as the horse's name, Litmus Test.

Litmus Test recently most recently won Los Alamitos, a Grade 2 stakes race.

Potente

Potente's odds come in slightly higher of the two Baffert-trained horses. He has won two of three prior races, with $262,000 in career earnings.

The second of these two races was on a 1-1/16 mile fast dirt track, where he won by a head at 8-1 odds. He has yet to defy the 20-1 odds he'll be facing in Louisville, but the 8-1 victory is a strong place to start.
