York cops warn of replica firearms used during game
Cops are warning York Region residents of the dangers of replica firearms used in a popular game among youth.
York Regional Police say officers have seen a re-emergence of the “Senior Assassin” game in the last several weeks, which involves students competing to eliminate fellow participants by shooting them with water guns, gel projectiles or foam darts within a short time period.
Because officers respond to weapons calls, police said they are required to make quick decisions about whether a firearm is real, a toy or a replica.
“The community should be aware that when police respond to any call involving a firearm, it is treated as legitimate until an investigation can determine otherwise,” police said.
Cops said parents and teens should consider the risks and responsibilities involved in owning any item that fires projectiles, and strongly discourage its purchase and use.
“Police-involved shootings have occurred where the firearm is later determined to have been a replica and the officer has been found to be justified in their actions,” police said.
In addition, cops said there is often no way to tell if a weapon is real prior to an investigation.
If a person or animal is injured, or a property is damaged by an air gun, criminal charges may be laid in addition to civil liability.
“Parents are strongly encouraged to monitor their children’s use of these type of guns if they are accessible to them,” police said.

Investigators are turning to the public for help following the death of a man in Brampton.
Peel Regional Police say officers responded at approximately 8:15 a.m. on April 16 to the area of North Park Dr. and Dixie Rd. following reports of an injured and unconscious man.
When they arrived, the victim was found and paramedics transported him to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries.
Police said investigators working on the case are still trying to determine how the man was injured.
Cops are now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have dash camera footage from the area between 8:09 a.m. and 8:20 a.m., to call investigators at 905-453-2121, ext. 2133, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
